San Francisco: Woman who mailed human fetuses sentenced to federal probation

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A Colorado woman who mailed a package containing three human fetuses to the United Kingdom was sentenced this week to three years probation, court records show.

Emily Cain was charged with a federal offense in the Bay Area after the fetuses were intercepted by Customs and Border Protection staff at the San Francisco airport in 2019. Cain worked for a business that advertised human parts and other “oddities” based in Canon City, Colorado and told authorities she believed the fetuses were legal to ship because they’d been obtained by a university, prosecutors said in court records.

Cain and her employer had arranged to sell one fetus for $20,000 and trade another for a mummified human foot, according to federal prosecutors.

In a letter to U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer, who handed down the sentence, Cain wrote she “would never do this again.”

“I possessed passion, respect, and dignity for the pieces I dealt with. I valued every piece because it was a real individual person, a person with a history, a family, feelings, and a life that was meaningful,” Cain wrote, later adding, “In retrospect, I should have done my due diligence and researched thoroughly the protocol surrounding such commerce. It will not happen again.”

Cain pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of mailing a poisonous substance, formaldehyde used to preserve the fetuses, shortly before she was sentenced.

Authorities believe the fetuses were stillborns from the 1920s and 1930s that were donated to Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and somehow made their way onto the black market, according to court records.
